Students attending Zombie Scholars Academy will check in at the residence hall on Sunday, June 18 at any time after Noon but before 2:00 pm. The closer students can time their arrival to the Noon-2 pm window, the better, though we recognize this is not always feasible. Please notify us in advance if you know you will be late.
Check-in at the Academy
We would like to provide you with some additional information regarding move-in day so that you will know what to expect. Please come to the main lobby of Missouri Hall to check in but leave your luggage in your car until you have completed the registration process (approximately 15-20 minutes).
If you have any questions, ask anyone wearing a Zombie Scholars Academy Staff t-shirt for help. We will have several tables set up to facilitate your check-in.
Room Assignment Table. Here you will check-in and receive your room assignment. You will also receive your room key, student address, and network user ID. A $40.00 room key deposit will be required upon check-in to cover lost keys. Please bring exact change or a check made out to Truman State University-ZSA. When you return your key at the conclusion of the Academy, you will receive a refund of this deposit.
Medical Table. You and your parents will turn in all medication to the Director. Exceptions will be made for students who have asthma inhalers, insulin, EpiPens, and topical medications.
Once these things have been taken care of, you are now ready to get your luggage and move into your room. If you haven’t eaten lunch yet, you are welcome to visit the Ryle Hall cafeteria where student meals will occur during most of the session. The Ryle cafeteria will be open from 11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Students and their families can purchase lunch for a nominal fee. After 12:45 you may visit restaurants in the Kirksville area to eat lunch prior to orientation. We are happy to make recommendations.
Students must check out of the residence hall on Sunday, June 25 by 11:00 am.
Tentative Schedule for Departure Day
June 25, 2017
|Early am||Students flying home via Kansas City board the bus to the airport (time is based on departure flight times).|
|8:00 am||Check-out begins – Parents meet your son/daughter in the main lounge, move everything out of their residence hall room, and go to the lounge on their floor to begin the check-out process. A staff member will accompany the student back to his/her room to make sure everything has been removed and the room is clean. The remaining check-out will take place at stations in the main lounge.|
|11:00 am||The last student goes home! (Note: most students will be moved out by 10:00 a.m.)|
Check-out at the Academy
On the last Sunday of the Academy (June 25), Staff will begin check-out for all students at 8:00 a.m. All students must be picked up no later than 11:00 a.m. If you arrive early, please be patient while staff prepares the details for check-out. All students will either be in the main lounge in Missouri Hall or the Ryle Hall cafeteria eating breakfast.
The cafeteria will have breakfast available for students and their parent/guardian. Breakfast hours are 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Breakfast that morning is included in the ZSA tuition for students; however, the parent/guardian will be responsible for their own breakfast. Our experience has been that most families are simply eager to get on the road.
After finding your student, you may go with him/her to their room and begin bringing your student’s belongings directly outside to your vehicle. Remember to check the closet, bathroom, and drawers. We do not recommend bringing belongings to the main lounge, as it will already be crowded with other students and families. If you notice that the room is not properly cleaned, students can get cleaning supplies from the floor lounge. But it’s the student’s room; they should clean it, not their parents! Once the room is cleaned out, your role is essentially done. The student will go to the lounge on their floor with the room key to continue the checkout procedure.
Students will then go back to their room with a preceptor to double check that the room is empty and clean and then return to the Main Lounge.
Students will pick up any medication they have left. Parents will have the chance to talk with the Director if they have any questions about their students’ health needs during the week.
All Zombie Scholars Academy students traveling by airplane who require transportation from arrival and departure points to the Truman campus must meet the following requirements: Students must arrive on Sunday, June 21, and depart on Sunday, June 28.
If you are traveling by plane:
Kansas City Airport
We will provide transportation from Kansas City International Airport (MCI) on the Sunday beginning and ending the session. A $75.00 round-trip ($35.00 one-way) shuttle fee will be charged for transportation to and from the airport at Kansas City. Because of the long commute between the airport and Kirksville, all flights must arrive and depart between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Transportation will not be provided for flights arriving or departing at other times. If these limitations present unique challenges for you, please contact our office.
It is possible to travel to Truman via the Kirksville Regional Airport (IRK). Cape Air provides three flights each day in and out of Kirksville. Flights connect from St. Louis-Lambert (STL) and the St. Louis to Kirksville leg is flown on an eight-seater propeller craft. The service is reliable, safe, and regularly full. Students will need to change terminals in St. Louis to meet their Cape Air flight (in most cases), and a van shuttle service is available to help them avoid having to go through security a second time. While we are great fans of the Cape Air service, and encourage patrons to consider it, parents will want to discuss logistics with their children if they are inexperienced fliers. Cape Air charges $50 each way, over and above the cost of your flight to St. Louis, to reach Kirksville. Both Expedia and Travelocity will enable you to include the Kirksville (IRK) leg in your itinerary planning. We continue to offer service for the KC Airport (MCI) because the overall cost of the flight and shuttle tends to be a good deal cheaper.
In order to meet the program schedule, ZSA students must arrive on the 11:15 AM Cape Air Flight (10:15 St. Louis Departure) on June 18 and depart on the 7:00 AM flight on June 25. (times may vary, please visit their web site)
Employees of ZSA will meet you at the security checkpoint of your arrival gate. Please do not leave this point until a ZSA representative meets you since they may have multiple students for pick-up. The ZSA staff member will be wearing a Zombie Scholars Academy staff t-shirt and holding Zombie Scholars Academy signs. It is important to send your picture because this will help us identify you at the airport. Also, remember to wear the Zombie Scholars Academy sticker sent to you with your registration materials. Students will be responsible for their meals on arrival day.
Call the ZSA office immediately if there is any last minute change in the flight schedule. Listen to the voicemail instructions carefully for directions on how to contact the employees responsible for airport pickup. Departing students are checked-in and escorted to the security checkpoint by staff members. Because of new airport regulations, the staff member will not be able to accompany the students to gates. Students and staff will be given instructions on what to do if a flight is canceled or significantly delayed. Be sure to discuss appropriate topics of airport safety and security procedures with your student.
Note: Students under twelve (though unlikely to be attending this program) may be considered “unaccompanied minors” by the airline, and you may be required to pay an extra fee (contact your airline for details). The airlines will require the name of the ZSA staff person who will meet such students upon arrival. We cannot provide this in advance; instead you must contact the ZSA office at (660) 785-5406 the day before the flight to get the staff member’s name.
If you are arriving by car:
When you enter Kirksville, you will be traveling either north or south on Baltimore Street. You will likely enter town via Highway 63, which has a bypass to the east of town. Be sure to look for the Baltimore Street exits or you will bypass Kirksville! From Baltimore Street, turn west on Normal Street and proceed to the University. (See the map below) The map will help you locate Missouri Hall and a list of hotels in the area if your parents need to stay overnight.
